Lunch & Learn Nov 2011 - "Bring Your Own Device"

Applaud's most popular Event yet!

17th November 2011

Applaud hosted it's most popular and highly attended quarterly Lunch & Learn session ever at the Sofitel Wentworth Hotel, Sydney this month.  The event saw the Systems Integrator and Managed Services Provider host Apple, Citrix and MobileIron and seats were almost exhausted within 5 days of invitations being sent; so much so that the room configuration had to be expanded twice in the lead up just to accommodate demand.

Ricci Danieletto, Applaud Managing Director and MC for the event suggested this is highly indicative of the challenges being faced by IT Decision Makers today, "The 'Bring Your Own Device' phenomenae is unique because it is not being driven by business enablement tools, new solutions or a change or upgrade of exisitng platforms. Rather it is being thrust upon the IT domain from an executive level, admittedly these tools and devices (i.e. SmartPhones and Tablets) do in effect render the executive more productive, but they are entering the IT space from a consumer based procurement path."

Danieletto continues, "So the IT decision makers are forced to make way for these devices, but they must be able to do so, whilst continuing to deliver core business applications, protect data, ensure security and enable heterogeneous device management. It's little wonder there was this much interest in the topic at hand."

Attendees enjoyed a 3 course lunch whilst listening to evangelists from Apple, Citrix and MobileIron.

Highlights from the event included:

  1. Rob Lee (Apple) provided insight into some extremely innovative applications employed by General Electric with the iPad2.

  2. Chris Nixon (Citrix) delivered a live demonstration entitled 'a day in the life of...." highighting the usage of Citrix Xen technologies. During this demonstration Chris vacated a laptop with a selection of open Excel spreadsheets and moved seamlessly across to his iPad2 and picked up his work on the same spreadsheet and session where he left the notebook computer.

  3. Stephen Gillies (MobileIron) closed the BYOD loop by providing insight into security & management whilst providing some extremely useful sample documentation which provides a roadmap toward enabling a "Bring Your Own Device" strategy within a corporate organisation.

According to an Applaud source, the growth in attendance to the Lunch & Learn events has been steadily growing by some 20-30%  each quarter, however demand more than doubled for the BYOD theme. Applaud is planning to conduct a follow-up event in Q3 FY2011 following the Christmas Break as it is, clearly, a topic in which IT Managers are currently seeking guidance.
